Gifts count in many ways
We appreciate our friends who donate to the Tulsa SPCA in memory or in honor of pets or people.
These commemorative contributions help us provide care for our dogs and cats while awaiting forever homes.
We do not receive city, state or government funding and rely strictly on private contributions, fundraisers and any funds generated from our adoptions in order to care for the pets and maintain daily operations.
All commemorative contributions of funds or supplies and materials are listed in our newsletter and letters of notification are sent when requested.
Here are some ways you can help support the pets.
- In Memory or In Honor
Donate funds or materials as a tribute to beloved people or pets.
- The Sammy Fund
Designate your contribution for the Sammy Fund, which provides medical care for dogs or cats with special needs or to enhance adoption opportunities for long-time animal residents at our shelter who are members of the Lonely Hearts Club.
- Sponsor A Cabin
Sponsorships of $600 for a cabin aboard our mobile adoption center (MAC) help with upkeep, maintenance, operation of MAC so our pets can travel the town to make new friends and look for families of their own. Cabin sponsorships may be made in honor or memory of a person or pet and will be displayed on a personalized nameplate aboard MAC.
All gifts are tax deductible and all impact the lives of our adoptable animals as they spend time with us waiting for homes of their own.
New Fund Honors Companions Forever Founder
Beloved Cat Sammy is Fund’s Namesake
The death of a Tulsa SPCA friend led to the creation of a new fund for Tulsa SPCA dogs and cats with special needs.
The late Gary Dunbar, founder of Companions Forever Pet Memorial, died July, 2006.
He was a special friend of all animals and the Tulsa SPCA.
We’ve created a new fund in his honor with all contributions to be used for:
- Extraordinary and special needs medical rehabilitation for dogs and cats suffering the results of injury, abuse, cruelty
- Activities enhancing adoption opportunities for long-time SPCA residents (members of the Lonely Hearts Club who have lived at the shelter longer than six months)
Called the “Sammy Fund,” it’s named for Sammy, a black/white tuxedo cat who inspired the 1996 founding of Companions Forever. Sammy lived with Gary in Houston in the early 1990s where Gary’s career was in pharmaceuticals.
When beloved cat Sammy died, Gary explored various options for his memorial and decided upon cremation. Receipt of Sammy’s ashes helped ease the grief of death.
Discussions with family members in Tulsa followed and later that year Gary returned home to Tulsa and opened Companions Forever Pet Memorial, along with his daughter, Wendy Dunbar Barnett.
Sammy inspired this compassionate and caring service for bereaved pet owners looking a meaningful way to honor the unconditional love and companionship given them by their pets.
The Tulsa SPCA’s mission is to rescue, treat, and offer a safe and caring haven for dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes with people to love them. Companions Forever, through Gary and his family, has helped us provide compassionate and respectful care during both life and in death to pets who pass through our doors.
We invite you to support our dogs and cats with special needs through designated contributions to this fund and simultaneously honor Gary Dunbar’s continuing legacy of love and Sammy’s inspiration.
