As an Tulsa SPCA volunteer, you do more than cuddle kittens and puppies.

Tulsa SPCA volunteers enrich the lives of shelter pets, prevent cruelty to animals, educate kids and adults and provide vital services, necessary to operate Tulsa’s first and finest animal welfare agency. We provide you with all the training and support you need!

ORIENTATION

All Tulsa SPCA volunteers attend a 45-minute orientation at our shelter. In this orientation you will learn about Tulsa SPCA history, volunteer opportunities, and the dynamic programs and services that we offer.

WORKING WITH DOGS

Volunteers interact with our dogs in a variety of ways. Whether you are working with animals at our main location, at a Mobile Adoption Center event off-site, or visiting a school each volunteer must complete appropriate training to work with our dogs.

LEVEL 1: In this course you will learn basic dog handling techniques which will allow you to work with “Green” dogs only.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation

LEVEL 2: In this course you will learn basic handling and training skills which will allow you to work with “Yellow” Dogs.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation; Level 1 training & 8 hours of level 1 activity within 30 days.

LEVEL 3: In this course you will learn how to work with the dogs that need the most attention and care. The training and skills you develop from this training will allow you to work with “Red” dogs.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation, level 1 training, level 2 training & 16 hours of level 2 activity within 30 days.

WORKING WTIH CATS

LEVEL 1: In this course you will learn how to safely handle cats, procedures for the cat colony room, and how to socialize our cats.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation

VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMMUNITY

MAC 101 – In this course you will learn how to MAC events work. Training will include how to work equipment on the MAC, adoptions, keeping animals safe and general practices for interacting with the public.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation; Level 1 training & 8 hours of level 1 activity in the last 30 days.

EDUCATION AMBASSADOR – In this course we will train you on basic procedures for school visits. At the end of this training you will be able to visit schools, and teach lessons to students.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation, level 1 training & 8 hours of level 1 activity in the last 30 days, humane education 101.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE SHELTER

RECEPTION 101 – In this course we will train you on how to work the front reception area. As the initial point of contact for the public, we will train you on basic customer service skills and how to work office equipment.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation

ADOPTION COUNSELOR – Because you will be connecting our animals to adopters in this course we will train you on dog showing, adoptions, and how to process adoption paperwork.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation

PET CARE ASSISTANT – In this course we will train you on how to care for our animals on a daily basis. Duties will include, but are not limited to, feeding, walking, training, and cleaning our animals. To work with green, yellow, or red dogs you still are required to have the appropriate training.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation, level 1 training & 8 hours of level 1 activity in the last 30 days. Additional training may be required.

CLINIC RECEPTIONIST – In this course we will train you on basic procedures for the clinic. Duties will include, but are not limited to, data entry, answering phones, and handling animals.

o Prerequisite: Volunteer orientation, level 1 training, and Clinic 101.

o Prerequisite: volunteer orientation, level 1 training & 8 hours of level 1 activity in the last 30 days, Humane education 101.
